Woolly Mammoth Ivory and Sterling Silver Ring with Gold Nugget
Warning, zooming in might cause hypnosis and spark a deep curiosity of planetary existence… Schreger lines unlike I have ever seen are the standout in this mammoth cabochon adorned with a raw gold nuggets set in a sterling silver ring.
My Aunt @kristinreevespark really outdid herself with this hand carved cabochon fashioned from sub fossilized mammoth tusk bark discovered @theboneyardalaska
The Schreger lines, although not always visible in a mammoth ivory, are distinct to Woolly mammoth ivory and are unique to each mammoth, similar to a human finger print. Mammoth tusks cary information about the animal’s time on this Earth and are truly a snapshot into their life. Modern technology can study carbon within mammoth tusks to determine age, offspring and sometimes cause of death. Complete tusks have grow rings at their core that can tell us how old the mammoth was upon passing, similar to a tree trunk.
Carbon dating places this specimen somewhere between 12,000 and 40,000 BP
